You send the message to the team and the others plod as fast as possible and take cover behind some of the really big turrets. You're hurrying to create your makeshift shield when suddenly a jet of stick webbing covers the front of the turret. It immediately starts firing way over your head and off to one side and continues to turn towards you when a stream of centi-rockets exploding obscures the turret for a moment.
When your visor de-photochromatises you can see the turret is badly battered and is missing its weapons barrels. Small spherical railgun slugs pour upwards into the night as the centrifugal force of the spinning station flings them from the turret even as it still tries to fire at you.

On your schematic there are 21 turrets between you and the nearest air-lock on R20.

You manage to make a metalloid foam shield. It sticks to the hull slightly and when you lift it off with the mecha claw it pulls the glass off the front of a solar panel. The outer surface of the station is almost entirely solid-state solar panels. Alpesh see your shield and simply comments "Nice. Why don't you have my job, again?". Jake also seems impressed and suggests "I wish we didn't have to hull-walk. There's no turrets on the inside - then again - there's more chance of being impaled on bits of errant station structure. At least the security boys can blow away anything that get's in our way".

At this point Max says to you all "Just stay behind us and stay out of the way, this could get messy!"

To Eng Team : "Yeah, but guess who's just volunteered himself for SPSR* duty for the next month! If there is a next ... well, you know."
*SPSR = Solar Panal Survey & Repair

To All : "Looks like we have our armed escort after all, people. No sense in us trying to do their job now is there! Might be an idea to stay sharp for anything unusual. This station's gone to hell in a banana boat. No sense in taking risks, it's only your day job."

Plod on, keeping the shield covering any threat vectors.

Run a suit diagnostic to ensure nothing got punctured on the way.

The security team move off towards R20 with your Eng team in tow. The counter-boarding turrets are no match for them. On R19 four turrets pop-up at once in a suprise attack but even then the most damage sustained was to a security suit. Upon inspection a few magnetic slugs were found embedded in the frontal armour.

Between the security and your impromtu ablative shields you make it to the airlock on R20 in around seven minutes. Here on the end-Ring the wild rotation of the station is almost noticable inside your suits.

As you're opening the air-lock your suit registers a point-to-point optic transmission from behind you. There's another suit walking along R18 and it sends "Can you receive me? My connection to the engineering channel is malfunctioning! I need to tell you about that engineer's damaged MagCrab!". He's walking as fast as he can (because you can't run on the outside of a space station as you always need one foot on the floor) but behind him you can make out a MagCrab looming, claws outstreached and heading for him.

P-PC to Man In Suit : "Faster, Lad! Run!"

Try to connect with the MagCrab and find out if it's being piloted. If not try to assume remote control and stop it (or try to start some kind of internal systems alarm to slow it).

Get Jake on the Crab case too. He pilots these things for a living so he should know a trick or two.

There's something very wrong with the MagCrab. It doesn't show up on your engineer-vision. There's no overlay even showing it's there, let alone the usual info about it's condition. Usually you'd look at something and its id number would be overlaid and you'd use that to connect to it.

Jake says "I can't see it. I'm going to look through the engineering roster and check throught the list of Crabs."

You can even see Jake asking about it in the engineering channel.
"The Crab records are all screwy. The logs don't correspond to their locations on my station map. There's several which are on the roster but don't have a current location in the logs or on the map. We should try and hack those ones. This crab must be one of them or we'd be able to see it in our engineering view. Try the following Crab ids:

MGC-3710ENG
MGC-3632ENG
MGC-3619ENG
MGC-3342ENG
MGC-2956ENG

while I try some others."
You hear him over the short-range comm say "Max - I'm strugging to hack that MagCrab. I might need you to shoot it in a few seconds time if Zak also can't hack it."

The guy in the suit says "Run? Why?" and stops to look behind him. "Aww, crap!" he says and starts walking as fast as possible as he tries to unholster a device from beneath his backpack.

Sit down, take my helmet off and partake of pork pie and Port.

Yeah, right. Wink

Work my way thru the codes.

Alpesh says "It's ok - I'm going to remotely detonate it. I'm only going to take out the viewport to relieve the pressure that's locking the doors in place. Then we can open it manually. We'll all be hiding behind turrets when it goes, at least that's the plan. This thing's pumped up to 5 times normal pressure - but that shouldn't take the hull out. This is R20, man. It's got armour that can withstand a micro-singularity hit and still be airtight!"

The guy in the suit is weaving between various defence turrets and the Crab's greater inertia means it's having to work hard to keep up. Eventually he stops fiddling with the device in his hands and turns around, taking long strides backwards as he waves it at the crab. Only when there is an arc of electricity between the crab and the guy is it apparent that he's using his microwave inducer but without the safety regulator active. The inducer is a tool normally used to check spacecraft radiation shields for leakage. It's supposed to be a low-power device so it's not going to last long at this higher level of output.

The crab appears to have been momentarily blinded as it doesn't follow the man when he next ducks around a turret. It just continues on its path, lashing out with its mecha claws. After a few moments it seems to recover until the guy blinds it again. The guy in the vacc suit is putting some distance between himself and the crab, giving you some more time.

"How close does it have to be before you'll shoot it!? I'm pretty sure it's not trying to give me a friendly hug. This thing's a pain-bow, not a rainbow!" he exclaims over the diffused point-to-point.

You search the local sub-grid for a black-box device which is broadcasting an ID on your list and you are within range of two of them: MGC-3710ENG and MGC-3342ENG. The station roster shows them both as being inactive, but the sub-grid is a short-range wireless network meaning that they're both nearby. Unfortunately you can't tetrangulate (i.e. the 3D equivalent of triangulation) by yourself but the signal strength of each puts 3710ENG at a distance of 340 metres and the other at a distance of around 120 metres.

You're in the middle of R20 and the guy being chased is moving from R18 to R19. Considering that a ring is 250 metres wide it's safe to assume that the Crab doing the chasing is 3710ENG. Although there's no actual response from the Crab - that doesn't mean that it's not listening on the remote instruction port. Care to give it an order?

Yeah, start with: Halt.

Then move on to trying to start up some kind of self diagnostic within the Crab using the recent blinding events as a trigger. If that works plant some kind of high priority Workshop Only Maintenance Code and get it to shut down.

If that doesn't work, and it gets within 200m, ask the Security to IMMOBILISE it (not blow it to kingdom come - it's no use to anyone in a thousand Crabsticks).

When you broadcast the "Halt" command you get an acknowlegement and your systems suddenly detect the Crab and it becomes overlayed on your engineer vision. It seems it was using a scrambled channel for some reason, but not a very good one. The crab doesn't halt, however.
The crab only has light external damage and is being remotely operated.

You manage to hack in on a low-level engineering function and it gives a complete system dump. With this information you're quickly able to disable a couple of key systems leaving it immobilised in space. There's still a controller connected but for now it's pacified. It gently spins through space, bounces off a turret and slowly drifts off towards the horizon of the spinning station.

"What took you so long?" exclaims the guy who was being chased.

Disturbingly the other crab has closed to 60 metres on your subgrid scanner.

*rubs hands with the glee of GM about to be cruel*

I was hoping you'd say that...

but before I do anything read the 4th paragraph in the post from Sun Nov 23, 2003 12:42 am starting with 'Alpesh says "It's ok - I'm going to...'.

I had a feeling that not paying much attention would bite me in the rear. Story of my dim and distant school daze.

I know how that works :-)
I used to just stare out the window, bored out of my skull. My reports were always "Paul is clearly intelligent and would do very well if he tried".
In fact, that only stopped when I got to uni. Well - the report part anyway.

Well, set to on the 'new' Crab.

Better yet, see if I can pilot the other to intercept the newer.

The crab you just disabled is still connected to the person who was trying to fly it so you'd need to force them to disconnect, first. There's only one piloting connection allowed per crab. It's not hard to imagine that the pilot is trying to regain control.

The second crab is close by. See the group thread at this point.
