For those involved in my soon-to-be-up-and-coming Burning Wheel game, I'd be interested in working out some Beliefs. (I'd also be interested in input from people who aren't playing!)

PDF from Adventure Burner:
http://www.burningwheel.org/wiki/images/6/69/Ab_Beliefs.pdf

There is more stuff in the other books, too, and lots of examples.

Each player has 3 Beliefs (And Dwarves have an Oath, too!).

One should be about why you are out adventuring at the keep.
One should be followed by a short-term goal.

I'm not 100% on what we want from them, and how they should be phrased, hence the discussion here! Smile
Put some ideas up, lets see where they go.

Over to you!

After reading the pdf I'm not sure I'm any the wiser.

So am I right in thinking Beliefs are character goals and at least one of them should be short term. They should have some ideological/ethical edge to them to.

The two part beliefs might be easier in some ways.

For example, a cleric of St Cuthbert of the Cudgel (mentioned last week) might have something like:

I shall bring justice to the border by ...
... capturing the bandits in the hills.
... rescuing the children from the kobolds.
... facing down the lynch mob coming after Mick's character.

Changing to a new one whenever a belief is fulfilled or abandoned.

The pdf says the second belief should be about one of the other characters. Something like:

I shall do all in my power to help Mick's character retrieve his family's sacred sword stolen by that vile villain Blackadder.

The last one is supposed to be ethical/philosophical but it should also be something easily challenge-able. Like:

I am sworn to truth, honour and justice therefore I shall never let a lie pass my lips.

Is this the kind of thing or am I not understanding it properly?

That's the sort of stuff!

While Beliefs don't have to be Goals, they are the driving forces of your character, the things the PLAYER wants to see involved in the Character's story.
I've seen a lot of talk about the two-part Beliefs, and the ones you put work well.

A combination of What you will do, and Why, is good. Preferable Why 1st (St Cuthbert's Teachings Demand that I bring Justice to the Wild Lands), followed by What you will do (so the Bandits must be captured!)
